The MWC-Barcelona

Yesterday at the Mobile World Congress, the event that Tech enthusiast all over the world had been anticipating finally hit, with the launch of the new Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S5. Though rumours and leaked photos had made the eventual launch almost stale but it was interesting in its different rights as we finally got a look into the official added features of this phone. Tech experts will have a whole lot to say about this new machine but I am just going to highlight on a few that matters to end users. First of is the fact that the screen is about 5.1" which is a little bigger than the S4 but not as big as the note 3. It also has curved edges but the S5 seems a better designed device than its predecessor. Another thing which makes the device worth buying is it's WATER and dust resistant capabilities. The back of the phone is made with a material different from the former phones which makes it more rugged and seems perforated. This is a plus to Samsung as now people's worry of durability is a little bit reduced, at least now I don't need to worry about keeping my phone on the table. Another feature which has been in the tabloids and now confirmed is the fingerprints scanner which is put on the home button. All you need to do is swipe down on the button and the phone captures your prints. It is speculated that this feature will allow PayPal users to carry out transactions easier. The phone also has a heartbeat scanner near to the camera flash (at the back). It's safe to say that the S5 is a health oriented device. It boast of a 16 megapixel camera and has autofocus. With a 4k video camera which is still new to devices. It has 2gb RAM and a choice between 16 and 32 gb internal memory and a 1080p screen display. It also has a USB port which is good news for multi device connections. The battery now last 10 hours while browsing and 12 hours while watching videos. In essence this is a more powerful device, more rugged and useful for the new age.

Military Rule?

The rumours making the rounds in various news, political and social circles this morning is that the President is set to replace the governor of Borno State, Shettima, with a military administrator and likely a retired one at that. The authenticity of this report is not yet clear to us as the source happens to be "an authoritative source" in the FCT. However, if true this leaves a lot to be pondered. Just how effective is this strategy, for instance, both now and in the long run? How much can we trust the Military? Will they not be tempted to start a coup, or even attempt secession (though it sounds ridiculous). You can't blame us for being pensive, our dear soldier man, indeed once beaten twice, shy. Are we to expect that this move is candid and without bias because we recall that this governor made a controversial statement last week and the administration was not too happy with it. What will also be the extent of the powers given to this military administration seeing as the legislative might also be ousted. How constitutionally correct is this move in a Democratic government and will it bring an end to the killings and ultimately an end to BH? Some of these questions are what Nigerians consider on hearing this kind of development. But since we are not sure of the truth this news bares, maybe we should not attach so much weight to it, because neither the presidency, the ministry of information nor even Reuben has said anything in this direction.

Sanusi's sins

Jonathan queries CBN Governor over N1b donation to Political Party. In a move that has surprised many, President Goodluck Jonathan has queried the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, over various infractions detected in the apex bank’s 2012audited account. The query, which covered 22 issues bordering on massive fraud at the bank, was sent to the governor on May 6 and the response, though expected back on May 8, was submitted to the President on May 21.The query of the bank’s account, which its auditors, Ernst and Young, passed without officially signing, with only a comment that it complies with the CBN Act, covers issues such as investment of a huge amount of money in an Islamic bank in Malaysia withoutany guarantee of its generating returns.Others are write-off of about N3.5 billion CBN staff housing loan and the donation of about one billion naira to a political party to open up offices across the country. This donation, which was given under the special access item in the account, is believed to begeared towards furthering Sanusi’s alleged political ambition in the 2015 general elections. The query touched other issues such as refusal of the apex bank to consolidate in its account, the trillion debt owed by the Asset Management Company, AMCON, and thenon-disclosure of the total liabilities through the bond floated by the company. The governor was also asked to explain the discrepancies noted in the 2012 account regarding the Nigerian Security Printing andMinting Company, a subsidiary of the apex bank.Other issues include the controversial donations made to some higher institutions in the country. Investigations have shown that some of the donations were inflated in the bank’s books. For example, while the Bayero University Kano, BUK, was said to have collected N4billion, the school authorities claimed it got only N1billion.The apex bank’s account became suspicious when the governor refused to submit it to the Financial Reporting Council, FRC, the body with the mandate to ascertain the compliance of companies with accounting standards, and the International Financial Reporting Standards, IFRS.Rather than submitting it to the body, the governor requested for seven years’ grace for the CBNto comply with FRC stipulations. The audit report of the account, which was submitted directly to the President, was later forwarded to the economic adviser to the President for his appraisal. The official okayed the account and noted that it complied with the CBN Act.However, unhappy with the economic adviser’s comment, Jonathan returned the report to him and drew his attention to the refusal of the auditor to sign the account. An official of Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria, ICAN, told our reporter that an audit report is worthless when it does not carry the signature of the auditor. This is not the first time the CBN account will be open to scrutiny but the bank has always hidden under its autonomy to stave off close inspection. The apex bank is on thefirst line charge and receives its appropriation directly from the federation account and exercises enormous financial autonomy. In May, the public accounts committee of the House of Representatives also had causeto query several expenditure items amounting to N4.7 billion in the CBN accounts. This included the N2.8billion whichthe bank said it spent on the construction of its Port Harcourt branch. The House in turn had worked with a reportfrom the office of the auditor general of the federation which queried extravagant expenditure by the apex bank for which documents were not made available for verification.Chairman of the House committee on public accounts, Solomon Olamilekan at a meeting with officials of the bank alleged that there were indications that due process was not followed in expenditure as no documents were provided. Some of the transactions that the committee queried include the sums of N23 million and N50claimed to have been spent for the same purpose of renovating the governor’s official residence as well as N848million spent on the purchase of a property from the National Planning Commission without any transaction agreement. However, like many probes of public institutions by the National Assembly, the matter appears not to have been pursued. The N4 billion donation to BUK questioned inthe President’s query had not even been known to the public. What had irked many Nigerians, including federal lawmakers, was the donation earlier in the year of N100 million to victims of terrorism in Kano, Sanusi’s hometown. The House of Representatives entertained a motion on misuse of public funds on the donation which degenerated into a rowdy session. Many members accused Sanusi or misuse of public funds.Member from Yobe State, Goni Lawan, described Sanusi’s donation of N100 million to Kano State and another N25m gift to Madalla bomb blast victims as “an act of terrorism”, arguing that attacks in Yobe andBorno states did not attract the same monetary consolations from the CBN governor.“When I first heard of the action of the CBN governor, I was surprised. I asked whether Yobe andBorno states were not parts of Nigeria, as these attacks took place there first,” Lawan said.Attempts to get the apex bank to react ourstory were unsuccessful. Over a week ago, when our reporter contacted the corporateaffairs director of the CBN, Ugochukwu Okoroafor, and confronted him with the various issues noted in the CBN 2012 audited account, he claimed ignorance of anypresidential query to the governor.“I don’t know what donation you are talking about. Was it done in cash? I’m not aware ofthe things you are saying. If you can provide me with this document that would help, because I haven’t seen it,” he said.Okoroafor said he was out of town on an official assignment in Abia State and would not be back until last weekend.A mail asking him to respond to specific allegations about a write-off of about N3.5 billion CBN staff housing loan, donation of about N1 billion to a political party to open up offices across the country as well as thedonation of N4 billion to the Bayero University Kano, among others, has not beenreplied.SOURCE: http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/president-jonathan-queries-cbn-governor-over-apex-banks-audited-report-n1b-donation-to-political-party/

Facebook just bought WhatsApp!

Woke to the news of facebook's acquisition of one of the biggest messenger application in the world, WhatsApp. The deal is worth about 16 billion dollars in stock and in cash (i.e 12 billion in facebook shares and 4 billion in cash). A staggering sum I must say. Thinking about it now, it does seem like yesterday when a friend introduced me to this messenger that has grown an integral part of my life, and I believe I speak for about 450 million users too if I should say, 'our lives'. It's convenient, reliable, cheap and effective. More perplexing are the details of the deal. We users are wondering just what this'll mean; is it increase in price or tariff, more ads(we all know how fb likes those things), or changes in services. But both WhatsApp CEO and the guys at facebook have promised no changes at all. They say everything will be the same. Facebook even said staff retention, same HQ and an inclusion of the CEO, Jan Koum in their board is part of the deal. This is hardly believable and begs the question 'Then why buy it for $16B ?'. Facebook claims they will treat the deal as they do Instagram. Anyways, now we have an old messenger with new owners, Facebook Inc. Who wouldn't #respond to that.

Prayers for Our Nation

On Sunday the President of the Federal Republic visited the Redeemed Christian Church of God and worshipped together with the General Overseer of the church, Pastor E.A Adeboye. During his presentation he mentioned that the insecurity prevalent in the country, in particular is the issue with the Haram boys, could have been 'worse' had it not been for prayers offered on the Nation's behalf. Social media was wroth by this statement, with most asking 'Is it prayer that will stop the killings in the north?'. It is rather alarming because we thought Nigeria is predominantly religious and people intelligent enough to know that once you abandon your first love (God), there is bound to be turmoil in the land. In the book of 2Chronicles chapter 15 verses 2 to 5, it is clearly stated what becomes of people that stray from the Lord. Our role model, America now has a liberal government readily adopting gay societies, abortion rights and just of recent, a state legalised Marijuana (Washington also). On the other hand, the country is also plagued with unemployment, debt, and security threats of magnitude comparable, if not greater than, the one we are suffering in this country. It seems ignorant, in a way, to make excuses for the incompetence we suspect and very well experience in our government, from the Federal to the grassroots, by blaming this menace on religious principles made or ignored. But it is more ignorant to make common, or worse not recognize, the esteemed place of God in the country or it's affairs. Our country does need prayers. A word........of #responz.

106

That's the number of people that were mindlessly murdered in Borno state some days back accredited to the Islamist sect, 'Haram'. Who would have thought that such a number, as large as it is, could be among the dreaded in our Country. The State governor of Borno met with the President thereafter, to tell him that our Soldiers are less motivated and less armed as compared to the Haram boys. Whether or not that is true is more puzzling than interesting but I am just dissapointed at how our government has proven so incompetent in eliminating this menace. Our armed forces prove themselves a joke in the light of this news. The report says these boys moved door-to-door, searching for people to kill for about 5 hours. 5 hours!! And in all this time no security agency or personnel fought back or interfered. I begin to imagine that it would have been a better story to hear that some soldiers fought but were out-gunned or they reported at the scene but were defeated than to hear that a slaughter ensued for hours without any action. Yet, coward soldiers take refuge in the south harassing innocent people. Where are you, O brave one when your nation needs you? Today the heros are those 106 men and women killed like poultry without the protection their nation promised them. The heroes are the young killed before manifesting their potential and those whose destiny have been cut short by the evil that plagues our land. The heroes are the children who have lost their parents, relatives left to mourn their dead and a grieving nation suffering in insecurity. Salute to the heroes!!! Please comment on your BH experiences here.

Feb14 #latepost

This should have definitely come sooner but it's never too late when Valentine is involved. I saw so many things on Friday, so much so I thought this weekend was too long (but there's no such thing as too long a weekend). Well, I spent mine in the church, *winks*, but saw enough to want a confession..... lol. Pimps went around their business with much pump and pride, ridiculously looking teenagers in attires of red and white, suya joints full to the brim and so many 'Singles Mingle' events all over the place. I didn't think all the fuss made about this day was true but now I know better. I personally think it took just that day for the prevalence of HIV to hit a high in my State, not that I know the cause. However, I'll let sleeping dogs lie. After all, what ever happens on Val goes with Val. I love you all for reading and I don't need a particular day to say it. #responz

Good Bye Stella

I did sincerely receive the news of her resignation, or sack, with mixed feelings. First of, it was obvious that there was so much fuss and lots of horn blown round her name because she was doing something; it was either something too good the politicians of our time could not tolerate or something so daring that treathened people's livelihood. Check the history of Nigeria, those are the people that get so much bad press. We all know she was working and changing the aviation sector for the good but the allegations against her, if true, could not be condoned. Maybe it is a case of good person being blackmailed, I mean this wouldn't be the first time in our dearly beloved country. Or it is the case of a hardworking woman being corrupt. Either way, I hope the next minister fills that shoe well. This was the most interesting news of the day, hence my responz.

Battle for the Airwaves

The Nigerian telecommunications sector is always an interesting topic for debate. But am more interested now in the data services provided by these companies. Without partiality or bias I would want to state objectively that Airtel has been fantastic so far in my vicinity. Their 3.75G broadband internet has been very effective. Speaking from an end user's perspective, I know from experience and reports from other users that Airtel has not only been dependable in terms of network coverage but also provided internet at top speed, compared to others. Their services are as cheap as they come. Without making this sound like an advertisement or portray myself with a hidden vendatta, I will like to say objectively that much experience with most of these telecommunications services has brought me to these conclusions. We all know of that company with very poor network and terrible customer relations, or the people adding 10 naira to the cost of a recharge card, or the people with that unbearably slow internet service. But I don't want to make this a solo talk.... so please #respond with your own favourite.

Blessed Is the Unborn

Blessed to the one not born in our generation, this era of evil and confusion. Blessed is he who has not seen the evil that men do, such evil which doth live after them. Blessed are those not in Nigeria to see this mockery of politics, to see our selfish politicians who sell their word and dignity for stipends. Our politicians flock from Party to Party for reasons of money and power and not for national good of citizens and voters. Blessed to he who hasn't seen the suffering and poverty in the land while yet seeing our 'rulers'in mansions and convoys. What a land... Blessed is he who hasn't seen the confusion in the land. The myriads of doctrine and preaching of truth. Who have not seen how the gullible are enslaved and patriots are disregarded. Blessed is the unborn who hasn't seen the evil in the world and whose conscience behold not iniquity.

Vatican vs Mallam

On my way to work and I just read the news report that says that Vatican is systematically protecting priests who have been suspected for molesting children and female members. In this period where the federal government took a strong and commendable stand against same sex copulation, it is then very dissapointing that the leader of the church would do something so abominable. How would priests, sworn to consecration to God be allowed to commit such evil. It is an abomination. Gbam!!! In other news, our dear Mallam will not let NNPC rest till they account for the money missing from the government's purse. An NNPC official shamelessly responded that he doesn't expect 'bankers'to understand Petroleum Engineering principles (paraphrased). Since they are disgracing themselves, I must #respond.

Déjà vu

I have seen this before. It looks all too familiar, 2006 or thereabout. I believed I had lost my ability to dream, but am not perturbed, because I'm sure we have all witnessed this scenario before. A certain Alhaji Abubakar leaves a certain PDP because he felt marginalized and left out of the 'loop'. This is irrespective of his esteem as a former Vice President under the said Umbrella. Well, I think he forgets that when too many people are under one umbrella, some people will get wet. "Former" is the word while relevance is the game, if you know what I mean. We all pray that APC will give him a seat in the caucus of Board of Trustees as was his grievance with the umbrella. However, this does not provide sugar for the tea I hope to take this morning and Nigerians couldn't be bothered. Like, we could care less. Well the news caught my eye and I had to respond.
