Early this morning, the 2014 Academy Awards took place at the famous Dolby Theatre in Hollywood hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
Apart from Lupita's awesomeness of a dress, Jennifer's red wonder (we all know which Jennifer) and Pharrell's one hat wonder, the interesting bits were actually the awards themselves.
It was especially a big night for us in Africa as Steve McQueen (a Brit by the way), Lupita Nyong'o and 12 Years a Slave took major awards. Lupita (By the way I love the sound of that name!!) took home Best Supporting Actress, beating our own Jennifer Lawrence who took the award at the Golden Globes and 12 Years a Slave took the Best Picture award (much kudos to McQueen).
The best actor award went to....... wait for it...... Matthew McConaughey!!! (Dallas Buyers Club). We all hoped Leonardo will take this one, but as someone hilariously put it, the guy would lose even if he were the only nominee for a category. Great night also for Cate Blanchett for best actress in Blue Jasmine (Amy Adams, you'll get 'em next time).
But the biggest movie of the year goes to Gravity with 7 awards and a street rep non can match. It won for the following categories:
Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron)
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing (Alfonso Cuaron and Mark Sanger)
Best Original score (Steven Price)
Best Sound Editing (Glenn Freemantle)
Best Sound Mixing ( Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead and Chris Munro)
Best Visual Effects (Tim Webber, Chris Lawrence, Dave Shirk and Neil Corbould)
Wow..... a lot of names there.
But I was particularly proud of The Great Gatsby, a movie I thought I was the only one that admired, which took two home in the categories of Best Production Design (Production Design: Catherine Martin; Set Decoration: Beverley Dunn) and Best Costume Design (Catherine Martin). Another movie to watch out for is Frozen which has Best Animated Film in most (if not all awards this year) and also at the Oscars. Best Original Song was “Let It Go” from “Frozen”Music and Lyric by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
All in all, it was a good night or morning if u stay in this side of the globe.
